Potting soil (or mix) is light and fluffy, designed for containers to ensure drainage and airflow. It usually contains no actual "dirt," but rather peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. Garden soil is heavier, contains topsoil, and is meant to be mixed into the ground to improve native soil texture. Never use garden soil in pots; it will compact and suffocate roots.

For edible crops (vegetables, herbs), yes. Organic soils use natural fertilizers like compost, bat guano, and kelp meal instead of synthetic chemicals. This builds long-term soil health and ensures you aren't consuming synthetic residues. For ornamental flowers, standard mixes are fine.

That is usually Perlite, a volcanic glass that looks like Styrofoam. It increases drainage and aeration. Vermiculite is a golden-brown mineral that acts like a sponge, holding water and nutrients. Perlite is for drainage; vermiculite is for moisture retention.
